The brakes are one of the most important parts of your vehicle. As they begin to wear, there are some signs that you will become aware of. The most obvious sign that your brakes will need to be inspected is the brake light illuminating on your vehicle’s dashboard. If this light comes on, make sure to bring your vehicle in as soon as possible so we can inspect it over. Another reason to bring your vehicle in is if you start to notice your vehicle taking longer to stop than it used to. Bringing your vehicle in so we can inspect the brake system for you can provide you with the safest travel possible.

Noticing if the Brake Pads need replacing

With age and miles, the brake pads for the vehicle will begin to wear thin. This results in them being less effective at slowing or stopping your vehicle. Make sure to check the condition and thickness of the brake pads. Typically, the brake pads should be at least one quarter of an inch thick. If they are thinner than that, it is recommended to bring your vehicle in so we can replace them for you. While inspecting the brake pads, also check the brake rotors. These should have a smooth surface. If you see any deep grooves or pits, the rotors may need replacing as well.

Odd sounds from your vehicle

Another sign your brakes may have an issue and need to be inspected are any sounds you hear from the brakes. If you hear a high-pitched squeal or squeaking noise, it may be an indication that your brake system is starting to wear. Also, you will want to listen for a grinding sound. This means that the pads have worn through, and now when the brakes are applied, the metal of the calipers is grinding against the metal of the rotors. You will want to bring your vehicle in quickly, that way you can help reduce the chance of damage to other parts of your vehicle, as well as a higher repair bill.

Feeling like your vehicle is pulling

While driving, you may notice your vehicle beginning to pull in one direction or another. This is an indication that your brakes may be starting to wear. Sometimes it is an issue with the tires wearing unevenly. That is why is always best to bring your vehicle in and alert us to the issue. We can locate the issue and the exact cause of it so you will know what your options are.

Vibrations that might be felt

Vibrations can be felt when you apply the brake pedal. There may also be vibrations felt throughout the car other than the brake pedal. If this happens frequently, chances are it is a result of warped rotors. This may mean that the brake pads have worn through and now it is metal on metal contact for the brake rotors. The rotors usually only warp when there is extreme stress for an extended amount of time.

Issues with the Brake Pedal

You may notice when you apply the brake pedal, it is mushy and goes to the floor before engaging the brakes. This may indicate your brakes are starting to wear, or that there is a fluid leak somewhere. Also, a pedal that grabs instantly to the slightest touch can be a warning sign. Uneven rotors, or dirty brake fluid can cause this issue with the pedal. To make sure your vehicle is the most efficient it can be, always make sure to go to regular maintenances. We can inspect your vehicle and make sure the brakes are in a good and safe working order.
